L’artista milanese Fabio Weik continua il percorso iniziato con ERMENEUTICA chapter I presentando il 16 Ottobre 2020 un’installazione site-specific creata per gli spazi di EX SCALO FERROVIARIO DI PORTA GENOVA, il cui direttore artistico della zona espositiva è Giuseppe Iavicoli, con la collaborazione del musicista Boss Doms, il fotoreporter Francesco Brembati e la curatrice Valentina Bizzotto.
Un’installazione immersiva che stimola il visitatore a livello multisensoriale coinvolgendolo visivamente, sonoramente ed emotivamente nella storia di Balla Coulibaly, un giovane profugo della Repubblica del Mali, ispirazione e soggetto dell’opera.
Il titolo gioca con il nome del protagonista: lo spettatore viene volutamente confuso riguardo la vera tematica dell’installazione e quello che sembra un superficiale invito a ballare sulle note della musica techno in contrasto con le restrizioni sociali dettate dal Covid19, cela invece tematiche di attualità, focus di tutta la produzione artistica di Weik.
Visivamente l’installazione si presenta come un accumulo di coperte isotermiche sospese, un serpente dorato che si snoda per la lunghezza dello spazio espositivo sino alla sua origine: una videoproiezione di pochi secondi del volto di Balla. Un sovrapporsi di sensazioni che in pochi istanti suscita l’empatia dello spettatore nei confronti del ragazzo.
L’immersione sensoriale è enfatizzata dalla traccia di sound design creata appositamente da Boss Doms su richiesta di Weik.
Le sonorità abilmente composte dal musicista, grazie all’utilizzo di suoni naturali come il rumore delle onde sintetizzate con il rumore dei motoscafi che navigano nel buio con centinaia di vite umane a bordo, estraniano lo spettatore dalla realtà proiettandolo attraverso un viaggio sonoro in un altro viaggio, quello drammatico che i profughi affrontano per raggiungere il nostro paese.
Un altro elemento chiave dell’installazione è la video intervista a Balla Coulibaly; in maniera volutamente confusionaria e provocatoria informazioni d’attualità vengono accostate alla sua storia ed alle sue opinioni.
Fabio Weik ha voluto come DOP per i video e le fotografie il fotoreporter Francesco Brembati, esperto di tematiche sociali e umanitarie.
Il video, “Il Mio” visibile ad una persona per volta al fine di instaurare un rapporto più intimo con lo spettatore, ha l’intenzione di spiazzare utilizzando informazioni vere e drammatiche della storia personale di Balla, sovrapponendole a punti di vista superficiali e popolari su notizie d’attualità.
Quest’opera di Fabio Weik nasce dall’interazione con lo spazio e con le persone; l’intera installazione ha infatti l’intento di giocare con il pubblico, che si ritrova in un ambiente surreale e metafisico immerso tra sonorità techno che richiamano lo scenario di un party underground, quasi un rave. Il gioco di parole creato dal titolo, sviluppa una riflessione sulla tematica sempre attuale dei profughi toccando, con un’ironia amara, diversi aspetti sociali vissuti da un rifugiato che lentamente si sta integrando nella realtà Milanese ai tempi del Covid.
Il vernissage di “-BALLA!-” si terrà il 16 ottobre alle ore 19.30 alla presenza dell’artista e della curatrice sarà accompagnato dalla degustazione dei vini della cantina Castello di Uviglie, viticoltori dal XV secolo con l’Arte contemporanea nel cuore.
In ottemperanza alle misure per il contenimento del rischio da contagio Covid-19 gli ingressi alla mostra saranno contingentati.
All’ingresso sarà rilevata la temperatura corporea e verrà registrata ogni persona.
E’ obbligatorio utilizzare il disinfettante mani fornito all’entrata ed indossare la mascherina in tutta l’area espositiva.

Fabio Weik (1984, Milano – Italia)
Graffiti Writer dal 1997, e artista contemporaneo.
Esponente attivo della TDK crew, storica graffiti crew nazionale e dell’ Interplay crew di cui è il fondatore, ha partecipato ad importanti interventi urbani, sia in Italia che all’estero, collaborando attivamente con amministrazioni comunali e fondazioni internazionali a progetti di Urban Art e riqualificazione urbana.
La sua identità underground rimane viva in strada e nel suo studio delle lettere, ma la sua voglia di comunicare non solo ad un pubblico underground come quello dei graffiti, lo spingono ad avvicinarsi all’ambiente più istituzionale sperimentando con i mezzi contemporanei dell’arte visiva.
Il lavoro di Fabio Weik rispecchia il contesto storico attuale e la società contemporanea dominata dai media e dalla televisione. Utilizzando simboli ed icone popolari, un linguaggio artistico basato sulla rapidità di fruizione del messaggio e sulla conflittualità dei soggetti rappresentati, i dipinti, i video e le installazioni site specific, sono a tratti introspettivi ma sempre con riferimenti sociali. Le tecniche sperimentali e l’uso di materiali non convenzionali come acidi, vetro, polvere, gesso e oggetti comuni contribuiscono a spiazzare lo spettatore innescando un processo di identificazione e riflessione sulle tematiche dell’opera.
Le sue prime opere su coperte isotermiche sono state presentate nel dicembre 2018 durante la mostra “Basquiat, la Street Italiana e le Visioni metropolitane” a Piacenza e, a settembre 2019 nella sua personale ERMENEUTICA chapter I a Milano.
La sua produzione spazia dalle superfici metropolitane agli spazi pubblici e privati, alle tele, fino ad arrivare ai capi d’alta moda. Nel 2009, infatti, disegna ed interviene sui capi della collezione A/I MISSONI uomo instaurando così un’originale collaborazione con Angela Missoni e i suoi stilisti trasformatasi in un rapporto d’amicizia.
Tuttora collabora con famosi stilisti e ricamatori come Graziano Giordani in una continua ricerca e sperimentazione della produzione su materiali innovativi.
Nel 2010 con la personale Sinergie in Fabbrica Borroni impone la sua visione artistica, presentando installazioni e dipinti controversi, attirando l’attenzione dei media per le tematiche affrontate.
Grazie alla collaborazione con la galleria Teseo di Milano, espone in diverse fiere d’arte (Affordable Art Fair, MIART), alla Triennale di Milano ed al Museo del Design.
Nel 2013 inizia la collaborazione con Cold Krash, galleria Australiana, e le conseguenti esposizioni in eventi privati organizzati da collezionisti a Sydney.
Nel 2014 si trasferisce a Dubai dove partecipa ad ART DUBAI ed eventi di graffiti internazionali come la STREET ART NIGHT. La sua personale “HORSES HEART” attira l’attenzione della famiglia reale Al Maktoum che acquisisce alcune opere per la propria collezione privata. Inizia quindi a collaborare con gallerie e musei degli UAE. N e l 2015 viene contattato per creare un’installazione per il padiglione Cina ad ACQUE 2015, evento ospitato dalla Biennale di Venezia in associazione con EXPO2015.
Attualmente vive tra Milano e Dubai dove lavora anche come direttore artistico di eventi culturali. Collabora ed è rappresentato da gallerie di Milano, Dubai, Pechino, Marrakech, Stoccolma, New York, Parigi, Spagna ed Australia.
On October 16, 2020, the Milanese artist Fabio Weik will continue the ongoing immersive project that he started last year (called ‘ERMENEUTICA Chapter I’) with his new collection of works, entitled: BALLA!. Presenting a site-specific installation created for EX SCALO FERROVIARIO DI PORTA GENOVA (whose artistic director is Giuseppe Iavicoli) Weik is working in collaboration with the musician Boss Doms, the photojournalist Francesco Brembati and the curator Valentina Bizzotto.
BALLA! is an immersive installation that stimulates the visitor on a multisensory level by involving them visually, sonorously and emotionally in the story of Balla Coulibaly, a young refugee from the Republic of Mali, who is both the inspiration and subject of the exhibition.
The title plays with the name of the protagonist: deliberately confusing the viewer about the real theme of the installation – what appears to be a superficial invitation to dance on the notes of techno music in contrast with COVID-19 enforced social restrictions, is instead a deeply-considered interrogation of current events: as is the focus of Weik’s entire artistic production.
Visually, the installation features a number of suspended isothermal blankets (often distributed to refugees as their boats land on Italian shores), a golden snake that winds through the length of the exhibition space to its source of origin, a video projection of Balla’s face close-up. A superimposition of sensations that, within a few moments, arouses the viewer’s empathy with the young man and others like him.
The soundtrack, specially created by Boss Doms at Weik’s request, emphasizes the sensorial immersion. Skillfully composed by the musician using natural sounds such as the noise of waves synthesized with the noise of motorboats sailing in the dark with hundreds of human lives on board, transports the listener from a musical experience to another journey: one of fear and danger, and lived by thousands of refugees who risk their lives to reach our country.
Another critical element of the installation is the video interview with Balla Coulibaly. Consciously intended to be both confusing and provocative, Balla’s story is juxtaposed against the way migration is presented in the Italian media. Visible to only one person at a time in a bid to create a more disconcerting, isolating viewing experience, the film highlights the disparity between Balla’s own experiences versus those commonly presented in the news.
All the videos and photographs featured in the installation are the result of a symbiotic collaboration with the photojournalist Francesco Brembati. Thanks to his extensive international experience documenting humanitarian and social issues including migration, Brembati uses contemporary artistic language to skillfully illustrate the dramatic history of this young refugee.
BALLA! by Fabio Weik draws on the interaction between space and people. From the moment the viewer enters the space, Weik’s installation plays on his or her senses: they find themselves in a surreal, metaphysical environment, surrounded by techno sounds that recall an underground party or a rave. The wordplay created by the title develops a reflection on the always current theme of refugees touching, with bitter irony, different social aspects experienced by a refugee who is slowly integrating into the Milanese reality at the time of COVID.
The decision to bring the installation BALLA! to Ride Milano was deliberate. Before Ride Milano was redeveloped to become a cultural space, the site was illegally occupied by about ten refugees, most of whom worked as bike riders for food delivery companies. Weik visited the space before the official eviction.
The private opening of “BALLA!” will be held on October 16 at 7.30 p.m. in the artist and curator’s presence and will be accompanied by a tasting of the wines from the Castello di Uviglie winery – winemakers dating back to the 15th century, who holds contemporary art at their heart.
In compliance with COVID-19 safety measures, entrance to the exhibition will be limited and government-recommended protocols enforced. Before entering Ride Milano, security will check every guest’s body temperature and register their contact details. It is mandatory to use the hand disinfectant provided at the entrance and wear the mask throughout the exhibition area.

Fabio Weik (1984, Milan – Italy)
Graffiti Writer since 1997 and contemporary artist. Active exponent of the TDK crew, an Italian national historic graffiti crew, and founder of the Interplay crew, he participated in important urban projects, both in Italy and abroad, working closely with local authorities and international foundations related to Urban Art projects and regeneration. His underground identity remains alive in the streets and in his study of the lettering, but his desire to communicate with not just the underground public of graffiti pushed him to get closer to more institutional environments by experimenting with contemporary visual art media
The work of Fabio Weik reflects the current historical context and contemporary society dominated by mass media and television. Using symbols and popular icons, an artistic language based on the high pace of the message plus the conflicting aspects of the subjects represented, Weik’s paintings, videos and site-specific installations, are introspective at times but always with social references. The experimental techniques and the use of non-conventional materials such as acids, glass, powder, chalk and common objects contribute to displacing the viewer triggering a process of identification and reflection on the work’s themes.
His first artworks on isothermal blankets were presented in December 2018 during the exhibition “Basquiat, la Street Italiana e le Visioni metropolitane ” in Piacenza (Italy). His production ranges from metropolitan areas to public and private spaces, to the canvases, right up to high fashion. In 2009 he draws and intervenes on the garments of the A / MISSONI men’s collection thus establishing an original collaboration with Angela Missoni and her designers which turned into a friendship.
He is still collaborating with famous designers and embroiderers, such as Graziano Giordani, in a continuous research and testing of production with innovative materials. In 2010 his solo show Synergies at Fabbrica Borroni imposes his artistic vision, presenting controversial installations and paintings, attracting the attention of the mass media for the addressed issues.
By partnering with Theseus gallery in Milan, he exhibits in various art fairs (Affordable Art Fair, MIART), at the Milan Triennale and the Design Museum. In 2013 he started working with Cold Krash, Australian gallery, and the consequent exhibitions in events organized by private collectors in Sydney.
In 2014 he moved to Dubai where he participated to ART DUBAI and international graffiti events like STREET ART NIGHT. His personal “HORSES HEART” attracted the attention of the royal family Al Maktoum who acquired some works for their own private collection. He then began to work with galleries and museums in the UAE. In 2015 he was invited to create an installation for the China pavilion at WATERS 2015 an event hosted by the Venice Biennale in association with EXPO2015. He currently lives between Milan and Dubai, where he also works as an artistic director of cultural events. He works and is represented by galleries in Milan, Dubai, Beijing, Marrakech, Stockholm, New York, Paris, Spain and Australia.
